Putting My Cape Down: A Journey of Self-Reclamation
Hey there,
I’m so excited to share the story behind the “Self” guided journal with you. It all started a couple of years ago when I decided to go on a self-discovery journey. I knew I wanted to help other Black women on their own path of growth and empowerment.
In 2015, during a trip that combined work and personal time, something unexpected happened. I thought it was just a cold, but by the time I reached New Orleans, I could barely breathe and was stumbling as I walked. Reluctantly, I went to urgent care, thinking I could push through it. Turns out, it was full-blown pneumonia, and it almost took me out. The doctor was surprised I even made it off the plane. But even at that moment, all I could think about was getting back to work and serving my clients.
That experience was a wake-up call for me. I realized I needed to put myself first and start some serious soul-searching. I had to figure out why I always put others before myself.
As Black women, we face so many challenges in life, while trying to appear strong to the world. But the truth is, we’re not always okay. So many of us share similar stories. It’s hard enough dealing with society, and when we look in the mirror and don’t love what we see, it’s a sign that we need to make some changes.
Have you ever thought about going on a self-discovery journey? Or maybe you feel like it’s time to prioritize yourself?
Trust me, I get it. We’re tired and feel unsupported. For years, I suffered in silence, terrified of letting anyone know about the emotional pain I was carrying. And let’s not even talk about the childhood trauma I was desperately trying to hide.
But I learned that if we want true peace, we have to confront life’s realities. Whether it’s going to therapy or embarking on a journey of self-discovery, you deserve to feel whole and supported.
I wanted to share a few tools that helped me on my journey:
- Creating a morning routine devoted to me.
- Taking a break from watching the news.
- Giving myself a social media detox.
- Setting boundaries and learning to say ‘No.’
By cutting out distractions, I was able to focus and get centered.
So, how do you get centered? What challenges are you ready to heal from? These are the questions that can kickstart your own self-discovery journey.
You deserve to live a fantastic life and be surrounded by support and love.
Sending you all the best, Monica Wisdom
